Zambia secures US$292 million for regional power project

todayNovember 6, 2026

Background

Zambian authorities have announced that a major high-voltage transmission line linking the country’s power grid to Tanzania is expected to be fully operational by 2029. Electricity Minister Peter Kapala told lawmakers that the estimated US$1.2 billion interconnector project aims to bridge the Southern African Power Pool with the Eastern Africa Power Pool, significantly boosting regional electricity trading and grid reliability. Zambia has secured US$292 million in grant funding from international partners, including the World Bank, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, to construct over 600 kilometres of transmission lines. Once completed, the infrastructure will enable Zambia to trade up to 500 megawatts of electricity across regional power markets.
