Belgium approves controversial searches of undocumented migrants’ homes.

todayNovember 6, 2026

Background

Belgium’s parliament has approved a controversial law allowing police to search the homes of some undocumented migrants who have ignored orders to leave the country. It applies to rejected asylum seekers considered a threat to public or national security. Searches will require permission from an investigating judge. The law passed early today after an overnight debate amid protests. Around three-thousand people formed a human chain in Brussels, while more than 50 demonstrations took place nationwide. Human rights groups warn the measure threatens privacy and constitutional rights.
