Parliament urges stronger oversight of public debt

Parliamentarians have stressed the importance of responsible public borrowing, warning that unchecked debt can possibly undermine economic stability and place future generations under financial pressure.

Speaking at the 9th African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices Annual Conference in Swakopmund on Tuesday, National Assembly Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said effective oversight of public borrowing is a key responsibility of the legislature.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said Parliament has a constitutional duty to ensure that borrowing decisions, economic policies and budget allocations promote transparency, prudence and the interests of citizens.

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Budget and Finance, Helaria Mukapuli, said the country is committed to transparent budgeting, evidence-based fiscal policies and efficient use of public resources.

This year’s conference runs from the 21st to the 25th of September and takes place under the theme of strengthening parliamentary budget offices to support legislative oversight and advancing the objectives of Agenda 2063.
