Police human rights training underway in Ondangwa

A five-day Human Rights Training Course for police officers kicked off on Tuesday in Ondangwa, in the Oshana Region.

The training is organised in partnership with the Office of the Ombudsman, and it brings together 50 police officers representing all 14 regions of Namibia.

Speaking at the official opening, the Police Regional Commander for Oshana, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, said that respecting human rights is essential to maintaining public trust and upholding the rule of law.

Commissioner Shilelo highlighted that policing must always respect human dignity, noting that arrests should remain non-violent; force must only be used as a last resort, and the rights of all citizens must be protected.

“When policing is carried out without respect for human rights, it undermines public trust, fuels fear and resentment, and erodes the rule of law,” Commissioner Shilelo stated.

He added that the training aims to strengthen justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity across the entire force, reaffirming the commitments guaranteed under the Constitution.

The training will run until Friday, 25 September.
