Oshana police engage Okatana Constituency communities to fight crime

Oshana Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, hosted a community engagement at the Haimbodi Hamukoto Growth Centre on Tuesday for an open dialogue on safety, local grievances, and legal awareness. 

“Another primary focus of the engagement was to strengthen the partnership between the police and the public while shining a light on critical legal frameworks,” Shilelo said. 

The meeting attracted residents from the Iikelo, Ohailulu C, Ondjodjo, and Epanya villages in the Okatana Constituency. 

Commissioner Shilelo and his team raised awareness on several pressing social and legal issues, urging residents to stay informed about the country’s laws. 

Shilelo raised concern over the rising dangers of alcohol and drug abuse in rural communities, legal compliance and regulations for businesses, domestic violence, harmful traditional practices, as well as the Combating of Immoral Practices Act. 

Residents voiced concerns over livestock theft as well as domestic violence and called on the police for swifter response times and more visible policing in the remote villages to deter criminals. 

Responding to the residents’ concerns, Shilelo stressed that the police cannot fight crime alone, adding that communities should work together by creating neighborhood watches. 

“To prevent and combat crime effectively, we need your eyes and ears. A strong relationship between the police and the community is our best weapon against criminals,” Shilelo stated. 

Shilelo further urged residents to actively cooperate with officers and to continuously familiarise themselves with Namibia’s laws to foster a safer, more law-abiding society.
