Malaria spraying campaign targets 1.2 million households

The health ministry has launched the 2026 Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaign, which will run from 14 September to 27 November 2026. The minister, Dr Esperance Luvindao, said the campaign targets 1.2 million households across malaria endemic regions.

Luvindao made the remarks on Wednesday while launching the campaign in Divundu, in the Kavango East Region.

She said the country has recorded alarming malaria figures this year, with 122 612 cases confirmed nationally.

Of these, 81% were locally transmitted, amounting to 99 078 cases, while 19%, or 23 354 cases, were imported.

A total of 9 956 hospital admissions were recorded, while 122 people lost their lives to malaria.

Luvindao said the Kavango East Region continues to carry a particularly heavy malaria burden, recording 37 488 cases, which represents 30.6% of the national total.

The region also recorded 22 malaria-related deaths, accounting for 18% of the country’s total malaria mortality.

Luvindao added that malaria remains stubbornly endemic in ten of the country’s 14 regions. These are Zabmezi, Kavango East, Kavango West, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana, Kunene, Oshikoto, Omaheke and Otjozondjupa regions.
