Omusati police urge vigilance as region records 75 rape cases

Police in the Omusati Region have raised concerns over a surge in sexual violence, recording 75 rape cases involving 76 victims between January and September 2026.

According to regional police spokesperson, Senior Inspector Anna Kunga, the statistics reveal a concerning trend, with victims ranging from a 2-year-old child to a 54-year-old adult.

Kunga confirms that both female and male victims have been affected across the region, and July was recorded as the most alarming month, seeing a spike of 14 reported cases in just 30 days.

Kunga added that police operations have led to the arrest of 48 suspects, noting that the ages of the arrested suspects range from a 13-year-old boy to a 65-year-old man.

Police are urging parents and guardians to never leave children in vulnerable situations where their safety might be compromised.

Kunga stressed that any suspicion of child abuse must be taken seriously and reported immediately to the police or local child protection authorities, adding that children must be listened to, supported, protected, and that victims should never be blamed.
