Windhoek Mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja said the City’s Fire Brigade responded to over 2 000 fire-related incidents, with nearly 1500 occurring in informal settlements.
The mayor made these remarks on Monday during the International Fire Safety Week , which runs from 06 to 10 October.
Larandja said fires remain one of the greatest threats to life and livelihood, especially in informal settlements.
In addition, Larandja said that through funds and sponsorships received during last year’s International Fire Safety Week, the City was able to purchase around 200 smoke detectors, which have been installed in households in informal settlements.
This is the second year that Windhoek is hosting the event, having reached over 5 000 community members last year through awareness activities, and thousands more through schools, churches, and social media engagement
