WINDHOEK, Namibia—The Global African Hydrogen Summit (GAH2S) 2025 officially launched today in the capital, marking a major milestone in Africa’s green energy push. Scheduled for 9–11 September, the summit is expected to host over 1,500 delegates—government leaders, investors, developers, and technologists—from nearly 70 countries.

“Some of these projects have now employed over 800 people… and more than N$170 million has been shared with Namibian SMEs to date,” said Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe at the launch . He added that N$2.5 million has also been allocated to conduct regional and international pre-feasibility studies, including in Canada, signalling a push for cross-border partnerships.

The summit, which has the government’s support via the Ministry of Mines & Energy, the Namibia Investment Promotion & Development Board, and the Namibia Green Hydrogen Council, will showcase over 50 green hydrogen projects, facilitate 20 MoU signings, and deliver CPD-accredited masterclasses, leadership dialogues, and an innovation exhibition.

Senior Vice President of Energy at DMG Events, Damian Howard, said: “Ambition in Action: Fuelling Africa’s Green Industrial Revolution” is not just a slogan—it reflects real investment and job creation grounded in capacity-building and strategic partnerships.

Namibia currently relies heavily on electricity imports through bilateral agreements with South Africa’s Eskom and the Southern African Power Pool. However, the growth of its green hydrogen sector is poised to shift that dynamic, potentially allowing Namibia to produce enough energy to export power to South Africa.

South Africa’s plan to roll out 10 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity in the Northern Cape by 2030 is expected to generate significant employment benefits for Namibia, creating around 15,000 skilled jobs locally and an additional 20,000 each year. Despite this potential, challenges remain: as of 2020, only 56% of Namibians have access to electricity, and 21.6% are unemployed.

As Namibia seeks to leverage its abundant solar and wind resources to diversify its economy, already targeting N$2.08 billion in Q1 green hydrogen investments, stakeholders remain optimistic about scaling green hydrogen’s impact. The industry hopes to create 250,000 jobs continent-wide by 2040
