The University of Namibia (Unam)on Friday bid farewell to its Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Frednard Gideon, as he takes up a new role at the Namibian University of Science and Technology.
Gideon, who has been with Unam for almost 30 years, will assume his new role as Nust vice-chancellor on 1 August.
“We do not bid him farewell with sadness, but with admiration and gratitude” read a media statement issued by Unam on Friday.
According to the statement, Gideon, who is from Oshikuku village, registered as a first-year student at the university in 1996.
” By his own telling, he arrived as a lost first year student, far from home and unsure of where these corridors would lead,” said the statement.
In 1999, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics. He returned to the university as a tutor in the department of mathematics and staff development in 2001.
He further earned a Bachelor of Science with Honours in 2004 and a Master of Science in 2006, both from Rhodes University.
In 2008, he capped his studies with a PhD in computer, Statistical and Mathematical Science from North-West University
The statement further read that Gideon’s academic career at Unam continued to advance steadily, with appointments as lecturer in 2005, senior lecturer in 2011 and Associate Professor in 2014.
Alongside his academic progression, he took on several leadership responsibilities. He served as Head of the Department of Mathematics from 2009 before becoming Dean of the Faculty of Science, a position he held for two terms between 2012 and 2016. In January 2017, he was appointed the university’s third Pro-Vice Chancellor: Academic Affairs, serving two terms in the role.
