Sheep marketing plummets

todayOctober 30, 2026

Background

Namibia’s sheep marketing plummeted by nearly 40% in September following the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the //Kharas Region. According to the Livestock and Livestock Products Board, total sheep marketing fell to just over 33 000 animals, down from nearly 56 000 in August. The contraction follows strict movement controls imposed on cloven-hoofed animals after FMD was confirmed in //Kharas on 23 September. Live exports, which make up over 84% of total marketing, dropped by nearly 40% month-on-month, with South Africa absorbing over 98% of those exports. Despite the sharp monthly decline, overall marketing volumes for September remained nearly 8% higher than during the same period last year.
