Namibia to establish world’s largest black rhino sanctuary

Namibia is set to become home to the world’s largest black rhino sanctuary, following a groundbreaking conservation agreement between Gondwana Collection Namibia, the ERP Conservation Foundation Namibia, and the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT).

The initiative, located in the Fish River Canyon region of southern Namibia, aims to reintroduce and protect the critically endangered black rhino while restoring other vulnerable species once native to the area.

At the heart of the plan is a 116 000 hectare stretch of land within Gondwana Canyon Park, contributed by Gondwana Collection Namibia.

The area will serve as the core sanctuary zone, managed under ecologically sound, tourism-driven conservation models.

According to a media release by Gondwana, the ERP Conservation Foundation Namibia will provide advanced anti-poaching infrastructure and monitoring systems. Their tech-driven protection model includes satellite tracking, perimeter fencing, intelligence-led patrols, and community-based informer networks.

Gondwana noted that the sanctuary will be strategically positioned adjacent to the /Ai-/Ais–Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, enabling a broader, unfenced conservation corridor that supports wildlife mobility and metapopulation management.

Meanwhile, MEFT will serve as a strategic partner, ensuring regulatory oversight and alignment with Namibia’s conservation policies.

ERP’s operations team arrived at Gondwana Canyon Park on 21 June 2025 to begin groundwork. Dedicated anti-poaching units will be deployed by 1 September 2025, with species reintroductions to follow.

An investment programme is also being finalised to ensure long-term sustainability. It will offer once-off and multi-year contribution options for donors, investors, and institutions committed to the cause.
