Ohangwena Regional Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa revealed in her State of the Region Address on Monday that the region recorded a sharp rise in malaria and tuberculosis cases during the 2024/25 financial year. Authorities investigated 8,552 presumptive TB cases, confirming 742, of which 700 were new infections or relapses.
According to the Namibia Press Agency, malaria also surged, with Ohangwena reporting up to 5,000 cases between late 2024 and early 2025. The Ministry of Health recorded over 56,000 malaria cases nationally, with Ohangwena among the hardest-hit regions. Health officials report multiple deaths and hospital admissions across northern regions, as seasonal outbreaks intensified along the Angolan border.
Governor Hamutumwa urged residents to seek testing and treatment swiftly, highlighting the need for improved community health outreach and prevention measures to combat both diseases.
