Former Miss Namibia and Miss Universe 1992, Michelle McLean, has expressed strong admiration for the current Miss Namibia, Johanna Swartbooi, describing her as an exceptional representative for the country and a young woman capable of navigating the high-pressure world of international pageantry.
Speaking in a brief interview, McLean said she has “full faith” in Swartbooi, highlighting her transformation from a model into a national titleholder admired across Namibia.
“I have witnessed her wonderful rise from a model into becoming Miss Namibia. She’s an amazing ambassador for our country—eloquent, well-versed, and well-traveled,” McLean said.
A New Era of Pageantry Pressure
Reflecting on the challenges facing today’s contestants, McLean acknowledged the growing influence of social media and online scrutiny.
“One thing about pageants is you never know what’s going to happen, and it can be political. With cyberbullying, it’s really unfortunate—because in my day I didn’t have that,” she said. “It ramps up the pressure for these ladies.”
McLean confirmed she recently spoke to Swartbooi, saying she has always enjoyed mentoring Miss Namibia winners, but finds Johanna “very special” in her resilience and determination to remain focused amid challenges.
Amid reports of controversy and walkouts at the pageant, McLean said she trusts Swartbooi to hold herself together and continue representing Namibia with dignity.
“She is the one person I can really trust to hold herself together as our ambassador. That is the most important thing.”
McLean Calls for Unity and an End to Tribalism Narratives
Recent online debates have included claims of tribalism among pageant supporters. McLean urged Namibians to avoid division and instead rally behind their ambassador and “Brand Namibia.”
“For us to be a united Namibia, it’s better that we all stand together—especially on social media—to promote not just Johanna, but our national brand,” she said. “Whoever looks from the outside should see unity among Namibians.”
“Namibia Comes First”
McLean, who has served as a global ambassador for Namibia for more than 30 years, stressed the importance of supporting individuals who elevate the country’s image internationally.
“We need to support our ambassadors promoting Namibia—our country, our investment opportunities, our tourism, our skills development, and employment,” she said.
“Ambassadors like Miss Namibia, our sports stars, and our cultural stars are vital. We must back them and not create a negative vibe or separatism between different groups.”
McLean concluded with a firm reminder:
“We are Namibians number one. Brand Namibia. Namibia has to come first.”
