When ImaneKhelif younger, she was told that she could not box because she is a girl. Now, she’s being told she can’t box because she isn’t “woman enough”.
Imane Khelif is an Algerian professional boxer. She is currently representing her country at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. During an Olympic bout recently, Khelif beat her opponent (Italy’s Angelina Carini) The first punch actually dislodged Carini’s chinstrap. After the second punch, Angelina quit the match and started crying. I could not stop laughing at the fact that she shook Carini’s world up in just 46 seconds. Following the fight, criticism spread like wildfire after it was revealed the Khelif failed to meet gender eligibility criteria and was subsequently disqualified by the IBA last year. But the International Olympics Committee do not have such rules, clearing Khelif to fight in Paris. Scores of people all over the internet even claimed that Khelif is a transgender woman. She is a woman.
Sigh. It’s the Christine Mboma & Caster Semenya argument all over again. Some say it’s fair game because she isn’t a transwoman, but rather a female with XY chromosomes. Others say she should be banned because she has an advantage over her opponents. Here is a perfect summary of this entire controversy:
