The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Esperance Luvindao, has confirmed a second Mpox case in Swakopmund, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Namibia to two.
Addressing Parliament this afternoon ahead of the mid-term budget review, Luvindao said both patients are receiving comprehensive treatment at the Swakopmund District Hospital and remain in isolation under close medical supervision.
“The first case was reported on the 18th of October 2025 and is linked to cross-border travel in the SADC region, while the second case was officially confirmed today,” Luvindao stated.
The Minister expanded that the suspected case in Rundu has not been confirmed as positive, meaning Namibia’s total remains at two.
She explained that Mpox is a zoonotic viral disease that causes a smallpox-like illness in humans, though the current global outbreak is largely driven by human-to-human transmission.
“We continue to strengthen our public health response through awareness campaigns, clinical readiness, and regional coordination,” Luvindao said, assuring lawmakers that all confirmed and suspected cases are being closely monitored.
The Health Ministry has reiterated its call for the public to remain calm but vigilant, urging anyone displaying symptoms such as fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, or fatigue to report to their nearest health facility immediately.
