French Prime Minister to Meet Unions After Mass Protests

Background

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced he will convene a meeting with employers and trade unions on Monday, after more than six hundred thousand people took to the streets across France in the biggest day of protests since the current wave of unrest began in September.

Unions say the true figure is closer to one-point-six million, and are demanding higher wages, pension increases and action on the cost of living.

The Interior Ministry deployed seventy thousand police officers backed by armoured vehicles, helicopters and drones to contain demonstrations at more than two hundred and sixty locations.

Ross Cullen in Paris says Thursday’s protests did not see a return of the rioting that erupted in October.
