Windhoek now has a new transport link with the official opening of the Dr. Hage G. Geingob Freeway. The 21.3 km four-lane dual carriageway connects downtown Windhoek to Hosea Kutako International Airport, marking a key milestone in Namibia’s transport infrastructure.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the third phase of the freeway was constructed by a Chinese company, supported by a Chinese government grant of approximately US$62.8 million.
Officials say the freeway is expected to support the local economy by improving access to the airport, streamlining freight and logistics, and creating new business opportunities. The project could also influence media coverage, regional mobility, and job creation.
Though the carriageway can cut the travel time between downtown Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport from about 50 minutes to just over 20 minutes, questions remain about maintenance and operational costs, as well as the potential impact on surrounding communities, including traffic changes, relocations, and environmental concerns.
