The CityLink bus service has started a caretaker service that will allow parents to send their children from Windhoek to the north without worrying about their safety.
A caretaker will be available on the bus during the school holiday period, checking on the children, assisting them where necessary and making sure they are comfortable, while also providing them with complimentary snacks during the journey.
The transport service’d founder and managing director, Ndatulumukwa Haikal, told NewsOn One that the company observed more and more children travelling between Windhoek and the north without their parents, and wanted to assist.
“We noticed that many parents send their children to grandparents and relatives in the north during school holidays, while the parents themselves may not be able to travel with them. Parents worry about whether their children are safe, comfortable, eating properly and being looked after throughout the long journey. We therefore decided to have a dedicated caretaker onboard to pay special attention to children travelling without their parents. We want them to feel reassured that someone onboard is paying attention to their child until they safely reach their destination” he said.
Children pay the normal CityLink bus fare of N$500 to Oshakati, with no additional caretaker service fee.
Parents must inform the office while booking that the child will be travelling alone, provide details of the parent or guardian sending the child and the person who will receive the child at the destination.
Parents are also encouraged to clearly communicate any important information about the child that the team should be aware of during the journey.
“This is about more than transporting someone from one town to another. We are still a young transport company, and we are continuously learning from our passengers and looking at practical ways to improve our service,” said Haikali
