Government to introduce new vehicle number plates

Works and Transport Minister, Veikko Nekundi, on Thursday announced plans to introduce a new vehicle registration plate system, to curb criminal activities involving fake number plates.

Speaking in parliament, Nekundi said the new plates will contain coded information linked to the vehicle and its owner.

He said the new registration plates will also feature the number plate manufacturer and other relevant vehicle details.

Nekundi also announced that taxis operating in different regions will have blue registration plates to make them easier to identify.

If implemented, the proposed changes will mark the first major change to Namibia’s vehicle registration number plate system since its introduction.
