Vice president, Lucia Witbooi, has called for continuity and progress in the country’s governance agenda as the nation prepares for the Regional and Local Authority Elections on 26 November 2025.

While speaking at the official send-off of the Sixth National Council, Witbooi commended members for their service and urged the incoming Seventh Council to build on their achievements.

The Council deliberated on 65 bills covering key areas such as public finance, justice, procurement, taxation, and health.

Vice president Lucia Witbooi said the Seventh National Council will inherit key unfinished business and urged it to uphold the Sixth Council’s spirit of dedication while strengthening governance.

“We must ensure that the strong foundation laid by the 6th National Council continues to grow. The 7th National Council will inherit both achievements and unfinished business,” she said.

Witbooi noted that the Seventh National Council would be tasked with finalising key initiatives, including the Regional and Constituency Development Fund Bill and the Parliamentary Service Commission Bill.

Witbooi commended the Council for upholding decorum, respect, and national unity despite political diversity, and said Namibia serves as a model of principled democratic engagement amid global polarisation.

“Despite political diversity, you have consistently upheld decorum, mutual respect and democratic values that define our nation.”

She added: “In a time when polarisation challenges many democracies across the world, you stand out as an example of principled engagement, a chamber where national interests take precedence over individual considerations.”
