Interview: Expert warns youth are missing out on N$257 million National Youth Fund

Business and economics expert Josef Sheehama has raised concerns over the low participation of youth in the newly approved National Youth Fund, which has been allocated N$257 million for 2025-2026. The fund is designed to empower young entrepreneurs, reduce unemployment, and contribute to broader economic growth.

He highlighted that only 187 youth have attempted to apply so far, with many struggling to prepare viable business plans and financial projections. Some applicants are also hindered by a lack of funds to hire consultants to assist them.

“The government and its officials must engage with the youth through mentorship and coaching,” the expert said, stressing the importance of building confidence and skills to seize this opportunity. He encouraged young people to collaborate with university and college students who understand business planning to strengthen their proposals.

He also pointed out that many youth lack innovative or bankable ideas, often focusing on conventional businesses such as barbershops or hair salons. He stressed that the issue is not the youth themselves, but a system that has not sufficiently trained young people to think creatively and generate employment opportunities.

“The National Youth Fund is a collateral-free loan—don’t miss this opportunity,” he urged, emphasizing that it is a chance to reduce youth unemployment while contributing meaningfully to the economy.

His comments underscore the need for active engagement, mentorship, and innovation to ensure that young people fully benefit from the government’s initiatives. With proper guidance and creativity, the National Youth Fund has the potential to drive significant economic and social impact.
