#FreshInterview: Deck Geeks
Meet the Deck Geeks, three artists in their respective fields residing in Windhoek—SebbyNgeteya, Beat Slangers and Loudima.Dreamer — a collective of creative individuals, aiming and striving to work and think outside of the box, and create an alternative vibe with music and art. Unbeknownst to them at the time, they blended like “a well-oiled musical machine” as described by Beat Slangers.
The Deck Geeks are simply a group of 3 individuals with a common creative goal when it comes to music.
Before Deck Geeks, they played individually at the Kapana Soul Sessions, and the rest is history in the making.
Here’s their #FreshInterview
Fresh: What have been some of your main highlights?
SebbyNgeteya: My main highlight with Deck Geeks right now, would have to be a show we put together called “10 Dollar Bill” in October 2015. The fact that we created a platform for ourselves to perform and showcase our own music that we’ve created, it was a beautiful thing to be a part of, and I hope we can do more of them.
Beat Slangers: Hands down I would have to say it was the “8Bit Sunset” we held on the 26th October2015, here we got to play music that’s a bit more abstract and left field from our normal style.
Loudima.Dreamer: There have been a couple, but one of them is when we pulled of own 1st show as the Deck Geeks titled 10 Dollar Bill. We basically just DJ’d our own original production and remixed material we did ourselves.
Fresh: When your inspiration starts to dry up where do you look to get excited about things again?
SebbyNgeteya: I don’t think in our case inspiration can dry up. We are 3, and each person brings something different to the table, so that always help keeps the momentum going.
Beat Slangers: In times of drought I turn to things I like such as anime or video games. But being part of a group like this one pushes you to stay on your toes so inspiration is not that hard to come by.
Loudima.Dreamer: Personally when I struggle to find inspiration, I either completely switch off whatever I’m working on, and drown myself in movies, art, music, something that captivates me, something that makes me say “wow!” Most times one of us is doing something rather spectacular, and that helps us fuel each other, and keeps the energy flowing.
Fresh: How did you come up with the name “Deck Geeks”?
Loudima.Ngeteya: A friend of ours actually came up with the name, years before we even thought of starting this as a collective. When it came time to think of a name for us, we didn’t have anything better and that was that.
Fresh: Who are you looking out for in 2016 musically?
SebbyNgeteya: Not to sound conceited, but we looking out for us.
Beat Slangers: Musically I’m looking out for projects C’More and BV, I also go my ear on Kwxme Sankxrra(MC-Ray) at the moment ,
Loudima.Dreamer: I’m a bit biased with this one because I’m working on it, but I’m looking forward to the Black Vulcanite album. I think its going to surprise a lot of people. Besides that, I’m willing to be surprised, there is a lot of talent coming out these days.
Fresh: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
SebbyNgeteya: In 5 years, I want us to have been able to have influenced and reached a wider audience. Not putting limitation on anything, at this very point, the sky is the limit.
Beat Slangers: Somewhere in Amsterdam or Japan
Loudima.Dreamer: In 5 years, I see myself touring Africa and beyond with the Deck Geeks, and on occasions, working on the beach somewhere.
Fresh: What is the one thing you can live without? (Be honest)
SebbyNgeteya: Headphones, music is everything.
Beat Slangers: Music collection
Loudima.Dreamer: One thing I can’t live without… probably my phone, I’m literally on it all the time texting, on twitter, managing social media stuff. It’s pretty much my mini office
